Free The Inquiry is devoted to the defense and advancement of open inquiry in higher education.
Through essays, expert commentary, and conversations, we explore how universities are producing — or failing to produce — the essential conditions of open inquiry, and what that means for academic life and the pursuit of knowledge.
Heterodox Academy’s mission is to advance open inquiry, viewpoint diversity, and constructive disagreement across higher education — the foundations of truth-seeking, knowledge-generating institutions. HxA empowers members to organize on their campus and within their disciplines, equips campus leaders with knowledge and resources to build cultures of open inquiry, educates academics on the importance of our principles, and advocates for institutional policies to protect open inquiry across higher education.
Free The Inquiry brings together several distinct strands of HxA’s work:
The Staff Desk features expert analysis and commentary from the Heterodox Academy team on developments in higher education and academic culture.
inquisitive is HxA’s print magazine, presented here in digital form, featuring long-form essays and reflections by scholars from across the academy.
Subscribers will also receive HxA’s Weekly Bulletin emails, event invitations, research updates, and other opportunities to engage with our work and community from our main mailing list.
If you care about the future of higher education and like what you see at Free The Inquiry, we invite you to become a member of Heterodox Academy. Membership is free and open to faculty, staff, administrators, graduate students, and higher-ed professionals who support HxA’s principles. Members join a broad intellectual community, gain access to member programming and events, become eligible for funding and other opportunities, and U.S.-based members receive a complimentary subscription to the print edition of inquisitive, delivered directly to them.
Subscribing to Free The Inquiry is totally free, and we’re glad you’re here. Becoming an HxA member is a simple way to participate more fully in the community behind this work.
