"The academy" created a system in which anthropologists cannot talk about biological sex. The same academy vilified genomics experts for pointing out evidence suggesting that SARS CoV2 is not a natural virus. The academy is ruled by a mindset that has made the vast majority of students afraid to voice an opinion on campus. The academy can stamp its feet in defiance of the compact all it wants, but the need for this did not spawn out of nowhere. My advice to the President would have been to do what I do when my kids are being obstinate. Make the decision to do the right thing feel more like their idea and not a mandate from authority.
I ask, "Compared to what?" The Trump compact has its flaws (I agree with about 80% of it). Can any one name a university that is living up to 80% of the level of academic excellence requested in the Trump compact?
I don't understand why such intelligent people would simply reject Trump's proposal outright without suggesting some alternatives. They should open a dialogue or negotiation with the Trump administration rather than digging in their heels and defending the orthodoxy they live with. Trump likes to make deals, so make a deal that includes the important items you want and allows Trump to see himself as advancing education. Are you so hateful you can't see a way to compromise?
