Very compelling.

What are the reasons UMD or others would go this route and hesitate to proclaim institutional neutrality as clear policy?

This is a great example of the tension inherent in institutional roles. As the piece shows, when universities hover too close to either extreme, moral imperatives or institutional restraint can constrain the very voices institutions are trying to protect. It’s a reminder, too, that these opposites can burn us if we lean in or out too far. I have a post forthcoming in my own Substack column about the potential the furnace of the opposites holds to either burn us or free us.
