Love this. Who cares if it was to appease Trump (doubt it). It's the right thing to do and I hope we would be brave enough to do it here at U Waterloo.
The pipe breaks. First there's a crack. The mission sounds different. Then another crack appears, but the mission is performed anyway. At some point, the cracks become visible: fewer PhDs, fewer graduates. Yet the mission keeps leaders at the helm. They keep performing, all while treating undergraduate admissions in a farcical manner. A new mission is plastered to the world. Then the bell rings. And the sound is no longer what it was.
It would be worthwhile to revisit what the "mission statement" of public education k-12 should be. There has been a vast expansion in what public schools now see as their "mission" since the days I was taught by nuns back in 50's. I'm actually more concerned about what is going on there on such a massive scale , than what is happening in universities, which I think are just the tip of a very big iceberg. I think universities are a case of you reap what you sow.
It has been 45 years since Pink Floyd did, "ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL" , and the dynamics of the bricks being churned out has changed drastically with the brick making being started quite early.
If you're dealing with a plague you clearly want to find the source, but you don't ignore those who have been affiliated until you find a cure. Majority of families are concerned more by what is presently happening in their schools , and less on what may be a cure at universities at some unknown time in the future.
We're lacking a national discussion on the present school situation , and it may be seen as outside your purview , but I think bringing more light to it helps bring support to the necessity of addressing this at the University level.
What's happening in SF is reflective of similar dynamics throughout the country. Families need a voice which is sorely missing and I say this as center left and presently politically homeless. It's to your advantage to clearly present why this needs to be addressed at higher education and using the present k-12 situation to highlight it.

“Yale’s core mission is to create, disseminate, and preserve knowledge through research and teaching.”
Bravo - the true telos of the university!
Now mean it, and get rid of all of DEI, ...
And to "create", add "discover".

Agreed!
But to the point of caring about k12 > higher ed — we should remember that the people teaching and running schools are educated at universities…
