Superb, important piece. A former conservative Muslim student of mine, today a highly valued social worker, went through a painfully silencing, isolating graduate program maggoty with performative and bullying peers- and worse- professors. He stayed the course with the support of trusted elders and friends and family; I was appalled by the intellectually hogtied climate he reported. I am relieved that today he is a professional who holds the highest standards of ethics and commitment to evidence and to his clients. A rare one, sadly.
I agree with your points, and I value diversity of thought. I was looking for articles advocating for what we stand for. I find your article to be a breath of fresh air because I want the field to be about competence and helping clients.
Thank you for your kind words, Erin. We have a growing group of heterodox social workers communicating via email as well as a Facebook group - plenty of other articles we can share. Please let me know if you're interested in connecting via email.
Of course! I am glad to hear that a group of heterodox social workers are growing. I also wrote an article in response to social worker ideology in higher education. I am eager to connect with you.
Of course! Thank you for validating my article’s points. I hope that social work can truly value different perspectives. There will be clients who have liberal or conservative views. It is important to keep that in mind.
